NYU School of Professional Studies Tisch Institute for Sports Management, Media, and Business Announces Sports Business Society Award Winners

Val Ackerman, Big East Conference Commissioner; Bill Daly, NHL Deputy Commissioner; Claire Smith, ESPN News Editor; and Tony Clark, Executive Director, MLB Players Association Will Be Among Those Honored at April 25 Event

NEW YORK, April 19, 2017 – The NYU School of Professional Studies (NYUSPS) Tisch Institute for Sports Management, Media, and Business has announced the recipients of the 10th Annual NYUSPS Sports Business Society Awards. The ceremony to honor the award winners will be held on Tuesday, April 25, from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the NYU Kimmel Center for University Life, 60 Washington Square South, 4th Floor, Eisner & Lubin Auditorium.

The Sports Business Society (SBS) Awards were launched a decade ago to honor accomplished sports business professionals, as well as organizations that had contributed to the industry in a positive and meaningful way. Sponsored by the Tisch Institute's Sports Business Society, this year's landmark anniversary celebration features an all-star lineup of awardees.

2017 Recipients

  • Val Ackerman, Big East Conference Commissioner – Lalia Rach Profile in Excellence Award. The first president of the Women's National Basketball Association (WNBA), Ackerman has been the commissioner of the Big East since 2013.
  • Bill Daly, National Hockey League Deputy Commissioner – Executive of the Year. In the past year, Daly played a key role in the addition of an expansion team, the Las Vegas Golden Knights, which was the first pro sports franchise based in Las Vegas.
  • Claire Smith, ESPN News Editor – Media Award. One of the first women to cover a major league baseball beat, in 2017, she became the first woman to win the J.G. Taylor Spink Award, the highest honor given by the Baseball Writers' Association of America.
  • Tony Clark, Major League Baseball Players Association (MLBPA) Executive Director – Bjorn Hanson Leadership Award. The first former player to head the Players Association, Clark was instrumental in the success of baseball's collective bargaining negotiations this year.
  • Peter Honig, Ascendent Sports Group Vice President – Alumnus of the Year. Honig represents many clients (MetLife, Minnesota Vikings, Verizon, Allstate, Wendy's, and York) across MLB, MiLB, NBA, NFL, NHL, and PGA Tour events. He served as an adjunct faculty member of the Tisch Institute of Sports Management, Media, and Business.
  • Street Soccer USA (accepted by CEO Lawrence Cann) – Lauren Beam Philanthropy Award. Operating in 16 cities across the nation, Street Soccer USA is on a mission to fight poverty and empower underserved communities through soccer. It offers a soccer-based life skills program that teaches job-readiness skills through age-appropriate content.
  • Seltzer Licensing Group (accepted by President Stu Seltzer) – Ambassador of the Year. Seltzer Licensing Group has been a provider of internships and jobs for current and former Tisch Institute students in the sports management program. Stu Seltzer, as an NYUSPS adjunct professor of licensing and merchandising, has brought in important guest speakers in the industry to speak and connect with students.
  • NOVO Consulting (accepted by President and CEO John Maguire) – Ambassador of the Year. Maguire, an adjunct instructor at the Tisch Institute, and Novo have provided numerous internships and have extended employment opportunities to current and former students of the undergraduate sports management and graduate sports business programs.

"We have such an extraordinary roster of sports industry greats who are an inspiration to all of us— our students in particular—and we are delighted to honor them through these awards," said Wayne McDonnell, Tisch Institute academic chair and clinical professor of sports management.

About the Sports Business Society Awards

The Sports Business Society Awards are sponsored by the Sports Business Society (SBS) and Graduate Sports Business Society (GSBS), student organizations within the NYU School of Professional Studies (NYUSPS) Tisch Institute for Sports Management, Media, and Business. SBS and GSBS are designed to create educational, social, philanthropic, and professional opportunities for students. The clubs have hosted a semiannual internship and career fair featuring top sports organizations, mentored students, and developed a series of sports lectures and panel discussions with leading industry professionals. Its members actively serve the community through initiatives such as Relay for Life and Big Brothers Big Sisters of New York. In recognition of its members' efforts, SBS has received the prestigious NYU President's Service Award (2005, 2006, 2008, 2013, and 2017), which is bestowed upon students and organizations that have demonstrated excellence in the area of community service, leadership, and volunteerism.
